This is Wednesday, first day of the Art Fair, note the nice carpet.

It looked so nice (note the term looked)
It was a long, hot first day. Sales were slower than usual according to artists who'd been there before, and slower than I'd hoped but the people were very nice.
We closed up our tents, caught the shuttle and were home by 10:30.
I showered, hit the sheets and was asleep about 20 minutes when the phone rang.
It was Josh. I'm not sure what Joshs title is but he was the assistant of the coordinator so I knew it wasn't good that he was calling me. So I say "What happened to my tent?" It wasn't mine but my friends tent. Freaky storm blew in and trashed her tent and he told me it was bad. So I wake her, she thought I was kidding, we get there a bit after midnight other tents had toppled and her tent was trashed, broken metal. Luckily only one painting with glass broke and one other had a bit of water damage on the mat. Could have been worse. We dried off all the shrink wrapped paintings and stored them in the building we were using for potty and water breaks.
I tubed up all my things and lowered the tent since the weather was still an issue.
We were devastated and figured it's now 2am well figure out something in the morning.
So of course I couldn't sleep and needed to find a way to help my friend, I call my Mom at 6am, she has one of those quick shade tents, not great but what else can I do. I meet her halfway to her house, give thanks and smooches and head home. I pack lunches, get dressed, wake my friend and tell her all she has to do is shower and go, I have everything covered, she reluctantly agrees. I pack the little car and we head out to see what we can do.
I give her my tent, I take the smaller and less nice shade tent and just as we have the big stuff set up, in comes the Calvary. My Mom, Sister, her kids, my Step mom and my kids. They help hang bags, stack tissue packs and haul out watercolors. I am a lucky woman with a great family.

This is where I spent the rest of the fair, not as nice looking but my customers didn't seem to mind.
This is where the story becomes a giant blank spot due to personal things and respect to a 28 year friendship. Lets just say it got me down in the dumps a bit.

My fashion model earned her keep. Day three I put an apron on her and she sold 2 of them.
The last day was rainy/misty and I used the sides from the trashed tent. They didn't quite fit and looked kind of junky but kept me somewhat dry and got me through.
Quitting time was 6pm Saturday and my hubbie and kids showed up and made quick work of packing our stuff. Luckily it stopped raining for the hour it took to load up. YAY!
Total tally
I sold 31 bags (2 of those were llama bags, thanks Lisa)
2 sheet book bags, 9 tissue packs, 2 aprons, 1 art postcard and 1 pack of buttons.
No chick bags though, what is up with city gals?
Even though that was the most in sales of any show I've done, the booth fee was so high it took the first 2 days of sales to cover my costs.
Things I already knew
I have a great family
other artists are great people
I love my customers, not just because they purchased something but they made me feel so wonderful with their kind words and make me want to continue this path
Things I learned
Bigger isn't always better show wise. There were so many cheepie mass produced items for sale all over the city, it seemed more like a flea market than an Art Fair. Even thought I was invited back, I'm sticking to my smaller, more quality shows.
Giving help that wasn't asked for isn't always appreciated
If I drink tons of water and stand on my feet for 14 hours on 90 degree days, my ankles swell up like water baloons. So Gross.
I really missed my blog friends
Three weeks till the next show
Its a good thing I'm young ;-)

Ooohhh lookie what i got. I took a welding class a couple of years ago at our local college and they had a booth there and one of the instructors is this awsomely cool chick, well she gifted me with this dog food bowl stand. Ain't it cool!

I'm a city gal (for now, at least) and I bought one of your chick bags (on etsy) and my artsy cool friends think it is the neatest bag ever!!!
I have learned that lesson on help/assistance that is unappreciated many times. Its a bummer.
Sounds like it may have been a bumpy road, but you came out knowing that you have your family in your corner and that is a great thing. I am happy for you that you sold all you did. And, of course the llama bags sold. Who could possibly resist?
Wow - that was a really busy weekend. Sorry about all the drama...middle-of-the-night calls, scurrying to fix things, unanticipated relationship issues...all that stuff creates a stress that is difficult to manage all at once. Happy to hear, though, that your family really stepped up to help. It's good to have you back. You were missed.
Wow...31 bags...that is AMAZING! Good job! :-)
Glad you're back, we missed you too. And sorry to hear about all the drama......makes you really grateful for the wonderful home to return to, doesn't it?
Hi angie,
You're right, city gals and chick bags do mix. I didn't know when you ordered your bag that you had a blog, I'll visit soon and get to know you better.
frugalmom,
Along with the bumps came lots of good. I love my family and do appreciate them every day. Thanks for the llama bag love.
farmgirl,
I am still worn out from my week, I'm kind of wussy that way. Now I get to take it easy a bit, pick some veggies, hang with my peeps.
I missed you guys too, I'm trying to bump the kids off the computer long enough to read whats been happening with you all and catch up.
I'll probably make just a few more for the next show but not this week, the laundry pile is huge!
farm mom,
I am glad to be home, and I can't wait to show my hubbie your past posts, he has harvested deer but not chickens. Thanks so much for sharing your farm mom wisdom and your dads too!
I've replied to your post 3 times now! gak! I hope this time my message goes through. We've been having big storms here the past couple days and our electricity keeps going out all day long. bah!
My first reply was uber long, but I think I'll try to type short and fast so this message might make it up. :P
I MISSED YOU, MICHELLE!!!
I kept visiting your blog every day waiting for an update. Did I mention before that I missed you?
You are the prefect kind of friend. I was so touched by what you did for your friend, completely trying to smooth over the tent tragedy to make her art show experience more positive.
And to give up your snazzy tent for that little cramped one?
I don't think I'd have been as good of a friend. I'm a little more selfish than that. Probably comes from my time as an only child....
I'm glad you sold so many of your handmade items. It's too bad that some of those craft fair places charge so much in fees, though. What are they offering? A little gravel square? Awful :P
You sure looked adorable in your booth. I'd have walked up to your booth and friendly face, just to visit.
You are one wise chick analizing(sp?) your craft fair experience and being able to decide what changes to make, what you can live with/without, and how blessed your are for such a wonderful family.
Oh. And I'm tickled that the llama bags are becoming such a hit. Llamas are such beautiful interesting creatures, aren't they. :)
ah, well, maybe it wasn't all that short and sweet! But at least my message made it before my computer went out again! hehehehe
I'm sorry things went south on you. Sounds like a friendship is on the rocks and that's got to be painful.
Congrats on the sales, though! I'd have bought a chicken bag. I'm glad you have a supportive family.
Hi twinville,
I hate when that happens. so frustrating. Everytime someone picked up the llama bags i thought of you.
Sometimes good intentions don't always have a good outcome. I think it's a character flaw I'll keep though.
The coordinator and crew of the show were so kind and helpful. That show is a pricey one but the economy is sure taking a toll. We'll see if it affects my future shows.
That photo was the first day, i don't know if the last rainy day I had the same expression.
I have always been able to count on my family. I thank God for them daily.
I'd better start making a few more llama bags (fun to make), I'm sold out!
hey ceecee,
Yea I still can't believe that part of the week. Time will tell.
Thanks for the boost. I'm nervous about my next show now.
Wish I would have known you were down there. I would have stopped by and said hi! Sorry about the tent issue. It is such a hard show to do. 4 days is exhausting!
See you in Saline!
