I love spaghetti squash, they were only .99 cents apiece.
Look at this GIANT sweet pepper, 3 for $1!
It's usually $2.99 for one.
So here is my haul.
50 lbs potatoes (the red worms attacked mine)
50 lbs onions
5 spaghetti squash
3 red peppers
4 pears
5 cukes
3 lbs carrots
3 zucchini
1 bunch celery
5 plums
1 head lettuce
Grand total
$40.24
The potatoes, onions and squash (unless I get piggy) should last the winter. I'm going to chop and freeze the peppers for stir fry. Shred and freeze the zucchini for sweet breads and soups. The carrots should last a month. Between the girl and the Guinea Pig, the celery wont last long.
I'm thrilled with my haul.
The kids have the day off from school tomorrow, that means no chance for me on the computer, so no show off Friday.(Darn it all!) Not that I accomplished much with my still clogged sink, rain, my dad away and dentist appointments.
I did make a bag but its a gift, so no pictures.
Have a great weekend!

What a great haul! I do a veggie coop here for organic veggies and have been very happy with what we get. It is all grown in California, so not as local as I like but I back it up with home grown and farmers market veg. I have an abundance of zucchini at the moment in my garden and thought they didn't freeze well so I am glad to hear they do! Can I just shred them and put them straight in the freezer? (Sorry if that sounds like a silly question!)
Hi Mo, my zucchini did nothing this year. I was told my soil may be too rich?? I didn't think that was possible. I envy your crop.
Yep, I just shred it skin and all, with my handy dandy salad shooter, baggie it and freeze. When you do thaw it out, there is quite a bit of water. I pour the water out for baking, or just dump in the whole bag for soups.
BTW- there are no silly questions. There are still tons of things I still want to learn.
Wow, that is a great deal. I mean, like an insanely great deal!! Just the potato's alone, could cost that much!! Lucky you :)
Hmm, I have never heard of soil being too rich either but I am no expert.
I wonder if your zucchini's needed help with pollination? I have read that sometimes they do and that by shaking the flowers gently you can transfer the pollen. Apparently you can also use a paint brush to transfer the pollen from the male flower to the female flower as well. I actually have lots of flowers on my plants, and lots of lovely bees doing their work. Worth a try next year perhaps. :)
That is a great price for all those goodies! Have a great weekend with the kiddos.
Dude...you got an insane amount of stuff there. Okay, will you share how you fix your spaghetti squash? I love it, but I have yet to convince my kids that they love it....maybe your way will help them love it.
I live in a very "hip" city and farmers markets abound. They are not giving anything away for a song, and so buying in bulk would not be cost efficient for canning. I know my parents used to do it all the time--mostly fruit.
I'm glad you had a good haul! Now get to cannin'!
Hi Erica, I'm just sorry I am finding out about this place at the end of the season. Now I know for next summer for the things it doesn't pay off to grow myself, like my red worm potatoes!
Hi Mo, I think lack of bees may have been the problem, I took a Q-tip to them then, but later in the summer I saw plenty of bees.
The person who said my soil may be too rich said I'd get lots of green and flowers but no zucchini and thats pretty much what happened.
Thanks Country girl!
Frugalmom, Dude, I know!
I bake the squash 350 for about 45 mins, serve with spagetti sauce, or just butter, salt, pepper and a shaking of parmesan. My kids will eat almost anything though.
Ceecee, luckily most of the stuff is for storage and freezing. I was going to get more tomatoes since the price was so good but had to pass since my sink was still clogged. It's all better now but with soccer and parties, I have no time. :-~
I go in that area all the time...we've got to go. Thanks!!!
