Good Hot Weekend

Spring soccer season is officially over. I love to watch the games but I also like to try to sleep in Saturday mornings. I say try because I am a early morning riser, but I like to have the option of sleeping in if I can.

I put 6 fertilized Black Jersey Giant eggs under Bandit Saturday eve.

I figure 6 is a good number to handle for a first time mama.

I waited til dark as to not freak her out while switcherooing the wooden ones.

Ok, so I freaked her out a little.

Is it 21 days or 23 days for eggs to incubate? I cant remember.

Speaking of eggs....

...these are tiny, about the size of jelly beans.

In my hubbies shoe.

We have a bakers rack on the front porch (curbside treasure) that holds our grubby yard shoes and a little wren made a nest and laid 3 eggs inside.

We named her Shoebird. We are geniuses when it comes to naming things.

I helped at the 6th grade celebration today.

Some other nice moms and I served 84 boxes of pizza and countless cups of lemonade to ravenous children. It was fun.

So what did we do on the rest of our half day?

The boy planted spaghetti squash.

They will hopefully climb the monkey bars I salvaged from our outgrown swing set.

The girl weeded the beans.

I weeded, hilled and mulched the potatoes.
I also weeded the Rhubarb patch.

It feels good to make more garden progress.

It was in the 90's so we broke out the floaties.

A cool swim is the only way to survive yard work in the heat.

I got my first delicious sunburn of the year. After suffering through a gloomy winter, I get that Seasonal Affective Disorder, it feels so good to get cooked in the sun.

Topped the day off with some of our local pork chops and a salad with all fresh picked goodies from our garden.

Me likey salad.

I wonder what it was the freaked poor broody Bandit so much. Perhaps the brilliant white light of the FLASH??!! :-)
Ok, the picture of the shoebird eggs are the best...how wonderful. Is she still tending her nest, though? I hope the babies hatch and you get pics.
Your pond looks like so much fun. Does there happen to be a floaty around there with *my* name on it?

Those salad greens are making me drool. Lucky you for your fresh produce. And you know I likie that cute patootie potato row marker, don't ya?! hehe

Your broody hen is BEAUTIFUL!! I hope the broodiness works well for you. My last fertile egg was destroyed and eaten by one of my nasty Silver Laced Wyandotte Sisters.
Between those two witches and the annoying Brown Leghorns I have to watch all of the eggs because they tend to try and break and eat our eggs! Grrr!

Oh! And my kids love the classical music of Schubertand we used to have a rabbit named Schubert.
Shoe Bird sounds like Schubert.

Did you mean for that to happen?
I'd say that's a very clever name, especially if the little wren sings a few songs while she's setting her eggs. hehe

Hi pat-I love the nest but I'm not so sure hubbie does.
Thanks for the garden props, its weedy but should feed us well.

farmgirl-So poparazzi in the face freaks out a chicken? Thats strange. She tends to get miffed every time I go in there.

We usually have wrens nesting on our porch but never in a shoe. We saw her the other morning in there but I haven't seen her the last couple of days.

You can have your pick of floaties lady.

Twinville- We have so much lettuce, two packs sprinkled on the ground gives a ton. I just hope the heat we have been having doesn't make it bitter.
I think the potato marker just may be my fav, but I do love them all.

Bandit sure is a pretty hen. She is a Golden Laced Wyandotte.
I heard if you put wooden or other fake eggs in the nest, they peck at those, realize they aren't edible and give up. We had an egg eater and on day Mr. Fox showed up and took her away, I wasn't too sad.

We have been calling the bird Schubert only because it sounded like Shoebird, but not because we are clever. But does accidently clever count?

I just peeked in and Shoebird is sitting on those little eggs. Yay!

Shoebird's nest is wonderful. I wish that I could have been on one of those floaties this week! Your bags are terrific!
